“Seaman Staines” “Roger the Cabin Boy” and “Master Bates” were in fact not real characters in the children’s cartoon show Captain Pugwash; it’s a persistent urban legend that an awful lot of people believe incorrectly.
So who was on Captain Pugwash?
I’m afraid the list is not too exciting…
- Captain Pugwash: The lovable, slightly incompetent captain.
- Master Mate: The ship’s first mate.
- Tom the Cabin Boy: The brains of the outfit.
- Barnabas: A pirate.
- Willy: Another pirate.
- Cut-Throat Jake: The main pirate antagonist.
The original version of Captain Pugwash was on TV for a total of 106 episodes between 1957 and 1975. Actor Peter Hawkins provided the voice of the characters over the course of the 12 series.
