Red Sky At Night… Is The Proverb True?

Red Sky - Empire State Building

We’ve all heard the old proverb, but is there any truth in it?

“Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight.
Red sky in the morning, shepherd’s warning.”

According to the proverb;

  • A red sky at night will often mean that good weather is coming and on it’s way.
  • A red sky in the morning means there is likely to be bad weather ahead today.

Why it works (in principle):

At sunset, red light means the sun is shining through dry, dust-filled air—often associated with high pressure and stable weather moving in. In the morning, red light can mean that clear air has passed and a storm system may be approaching.

The proverb is not 100% foolproof by any means.  However it is actually a surprisingly decent rule of thumb
