Most people will recognise the TARDIS as the iconic time machine from the British TV series Doctor Who.
But what does TARDIS stand for?

What is it?
- It’s a sentient spacecraft used mainly by the Doctor, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey.
- It can travel anywhere in space and time, to the past, the future, or to distant galaxies far away.
Why is the TARDIS a blue police box?
- The TARDIS has a chameleon circuit meant to blend into its surroundings.
- It got stuck in 1960s Earth, so it’s permanently disguised as a British police box (which were common at the time).
Key features
- The TARDIS is much much bigger on the inside: The interior is vastly larger than its exterior.
- It is nearly indestructible and is also capable of repairing itself.
- Can help to translate languages for its passengers.
- Often acts like a character itself—helping, resisting, or guiding the Doctor.
Fun facts
- There are many TARDISes, but the Doctor’s is especially old and quirky.
- The sound it makes when appearing or disappearing is deliberately described as a “wheezing, groaning” noise.
- The TARDIS doesn’t always go where the Doctor wants—but often where they need to go.
