Is Guinness Good For You?

Well we’re just back from a weekend jolly to Dublin. And while we were there I got curious…. They always used to say Guinness is good for you. But, is it really?

Well, having done some digging it turns out it might be. Guinness can be okay for you in moderation, but it’s not a health drink (despite the old myths). All of which is why the advertising slogan has slowly disappeared into the ether.

The good 👍

  • Lower calories than many beers
A pint of Guinness (~210 kcal) is less than many lagers.
  • Contains antioxidants
From roasted barley (similar to those in dark chocolate, but much smaller amounts).
  • Iron – but very little
It does contain iron, but definitely not enough to treat or prevent anaemia sadly.
  • May aid relaxation & social wellbeing
One pint can help people unwind, which does have genuine mental health benefits.

The not-so-good 👎

  • Alcohol is still alcohol
Too much increases risk of liver disease, cancer, heart problems, and poor sleep.
  • Can affect gut health in larger amounts.
  • Not good for iron deficiency (despite the myth doctors once told).

Bottom line

  • ✅ 1 pint occasionally – fine for most adults
  • ⚠️ Not a health tonic
  • ❌ Drinking for health reasons is not recommended
  • 🚫 Avoid if pregnant, on certain meds, or with liver issues
