There really is a place called Hell

Hell Norway Village Sign

Yes, Hell in Norway is a real place.  And better still yes, it does freeze over every winter. 😈❄️

🔥 Where is Hell?

  • Village in Norway, near Trondheim
  • In Stjørdal municipality, Trøndelag county
  • Population: about 1,500 people live in Hell

🧊 Why it’s famous

  • The name “Hell” comes from Old Norse hellir, meaning “cave” or “overhang”, not the afterlife.
  • In winter, temperatures regularly drop below zero — so “Hell freezes over” literally does happen every year.

🚉 Hell Station

  • The railway station has of course a sign reading “Hell”
  • A nearby goods shed is marked “Gods” (Norwegian for “freight”) → which is famously photographed as “Gods expediting to Hell”

🌡️ Climate irony

  • Summer temperatures can reach very warm highs of 25–30°C (77–86°F)
  • Winter can drop to as low as –25°C (–13°F)

😄 Pop culture & trivia

  • Popular stop for tourists taking photos with the sign
  • Frequently used in pub quizzes, jokes, and headline puns
  • One of the world’s best examples of linguistic coincidence tourism

    • Heaven, England
