Loch Ness holds more water than all of England and Wales’ lakes combined

Loch Ness

Everyone loves a good story or two about the Loch Ness monster. But this one does check out as true and a fact and is widely reported and agreed.

Loch Ness isn’t simply well known for what might or might not be lurking beneath the surface – it’s also the UK’s largest lake by volume by some considerable way.  Loch Ness is credited with holding nearly double the volume of water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined.

For those that aren’t sure, Loch Ness is a large freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands, near the city of Inverness. It is formed of part of a long natural fault line called the Great Glen.

Loch Ness is:

  • About 37 km (23 miles) long
  • Up to 230 metres (755 feet) deep

It is dark and murky in appearance because of peat in the water,  which of course helps fuel the mystery…
